Why did the Queen protect the mouse?
She protected the mouse because it fed her every day and without the food they would have starved.

Why did the Fairy need to know that the queen could be a true friend before she would help her and her baby?
The fairy needed to know because if she didn't she wouldn't be sure after freeing them that they would be kind to her.
